What are Google AI Overviews?
AI Overviews are Google's AI-generated answer summaries that appear at the top of search results — above all organic listings — for queries Google decides warrant them. They synthesize an answer from retrieved pages and link a set of source cards.
Definition
An AI Overview is a generated block on the Google results page: a written answer assembled from indexed content, with links to the pages it drew from. It is not a snippet quoted from one page (that's a featured snippet) — it is a synthesis across several, with its own layout and its own click behavior.
Why AI Overviews matter for SEO
For queries that trigger one, the Overview intercepts attention before any organic result. Studies across the industry consistently associate Overview presence with lower click-through to traditional listings — the answer is consumed on the results page. The compensating surface is the Overview's source cards: being linked inside the answer replaces some of what position one used to deliver.
How Overviews select sources
Google synthesizes from its index, favoring pages that answer the query directly and can be lifted cleanly — the same citable-atom structure that wins on other engines (how AI engines choose citations). Ranking helps but doesn't decide: Overviews regularly cite pages from outside the top organic results.
- AI Overviews render above all organic results when triggered.
- They synthesize across multiple pages and link source cards — unlike single-source featured snippets.
- Whether a query triggers an Overview changes over time; coverage keeps expanding.
- Overview citations can come from pages outside the top organic positions.
Tracking your AI Overview presence
For each target query: does an Overview trigger, are you mentioned in it, is your domain among its sources, and who else is? PilotCite tracks all four over time — see the Google AI Overviews platform page.
